In my experience, 256Kb down service package is good for general Internet surfing, found that a 1.5mb down service package is better for streaming video because there is less buffering.

  • 1 mbps = 1000 kbps
  • 1.5 mbps = 1500 kbps

The Transfer Rate is the time it takes for a web page to load or to download a file, measured in kB/sec or mB/sec. Wireless, Satellite, DSL and Cable is considered broadband. A reasonable transfer rate is an acceptable transfer rate we can live with.

Below is an example:

Package Speed Maximum Transfer Rate A Reasonable Transfer Rate
53.3k (dial-up) 6.6625 kB/sec 5 kB/sec
256k (broadband) 32 kB/sec 26 kB/sec
1500k (broadband) 187.5 kB/sec 135 kB/sec
